Mid-Year Check-In: Is Your Sales Plan on Track?
Share
At the start of the year, most businesses have a plan. Targets are set, territories are assigned, and everyone has a sense of where things are headed.
By mid-year, reality has had its say. Weather, markets, staffing, and customer behavior have all played a part. Now is the time to take an honest look.
Why Mid-Year Matters
Wait until the fourth quarter to review your plan, and there's little time left to change the outcome. Check in now, and you still have half a year to adjust.
A mid-year review isn't about blame. It's about seeing clearly and making better decisions for the months ahead.
Questions Worth Asking
A useful check-in starts with a few straightforward questions.
- Are we on pace with our sales targets, and do we understand why or why not?
- Which territories, products, or customer groups are performing best?
- Where are we falling short, and is the cause temporary or structural?
- Is the team spending time on the right accounts and activities?
- Have market conditions shifted in a way our plan didn't anticipate?
The answers often reveal more than the numbers alone.
Look Beyond the Totals
Overall sales can hide important details. A strong showing from one region might mask weakness in another. A single large order can make a slow pipeline look healthy.
Breaking results down by territory, product, and customer type gives a much clearer picture of what's really happening.
Separate Activity From Results
Busy doesn't always mean productive. A team can make plenty of calls and visits without moving the needle.
It's worth asking whether the effort is aimed at the right customers and whether conversations are actually advancing toward sales.
Be Willing to Adjust
A plan written in January was based on the best information available at the time. If conditions have changed, the plan should too.
That might mean shifting focus to stronger territories, reassigning accounts, refining messaging, or rethinking where new business is likely to come from. Small, timely adjustments are usually better than a big scramble at year end.
Planning Is Only Half the Job
Plenty of businesses know what needs to change. The harder part is making it happen while still running daily operations.
That's where outside help can make a difference, both in seeing the situation clearly and in putting the adjustments into action.
