Getting Ready for Year-End: Reviewing What Worked

The end of the year tends to rush by. Busy seasons wrap up, the holidays arrive, and suddenly it's January with no clear lessons from the year behind you.

Taking time for an honest review before you set next year's plans can save a lot of wasted effort.

Look at results, not just revenue

Total sales tell part of the story. The more useful questions sit underneath.

  • Where did growth come from? New customers, existing accounts, a specific product, or a specific region?
  • What stalled? Territories, products, or relationships that didn't move the way you expected.
  • Which efforts paid off? Trade shows, outreach campaigns, new hires, or partnerships.
  • What took more time than it was worth? Activities that felt busy but didn't produce results.

Talk to the people in the field

Your sales team and customer-facing staff see things that never show up in reports. They know which objections keep coming up, where competitors are gaining ground, and which customers are quietly drifting away.

A short, structured conversation with them often reveals more than a stack of numbers.

Be honest about execution

Many businesses start the year with good plans. The gap is usually in follow-through.

Did the strategy actually get carried out? If not, was it the wrong plan, or the right plan without enough people, time, or structure behind it? That distinction matters for what you do next.

Common year-end blind spots

  • Repeating last year's plan without checking whether it worked
  • Judging success only by total sales instead of where sales came from
  • Overlooking customers who bought less or stopped buying
  • Setting new goals without changing anything about how the team operates

Turn the review into decisions

A review is only useful if it leads somewhere. The goal is a short list of clear choices: what to keep doing, what to change, and what to stop.

Those decisions then become the foundation for next year's sales plan, territory priorities, and team structure.

How RBDA supports year-end planning

RBDA helps rural businesses look clearly at what's working and what isn't, then build a practical plan for the year ahead. Because strategy only works when it can be executed, we also help carry that plan into the field.
